Edward Gordon Craig was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, the son of E W Godwin and the actress Ellen Terry. He was a wood engraver, editor, journalist, but above all genius of the theatre. His stage designs stripped theatre down to its essentials, clearing the stage for the 20th Century. His early prints show the influence of Art Nouveau - some were hand coloured, others bold silhouettes in flat poster-like blocks.
