Alice Coats studied at Birmingham School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She was best known for botanical and horticultural works. Her first book Flowers and their history was published in 1956, and The Book of Flowers in 1973; this volume included woodcuts, engravings and watercolours.
