Stephanie Bergman was born in London. She studied at St Martin’s School of Art, where she later taught. She had her first solo exhibition at Garage, London in 1973. Her early works were large colour field paintings made with a spray gun, which in time became unstretched pieces of canvas sewn together and hung on the wall.
